-=Reborn JEDI=- Forums _ Discussion _ Spambots Begone!

Posted by: Ruggiero Feb 6 2007, 12:28 PM

I must say, some people are so sick. God knows they would probably post those links on a message-board maintained by 9-year-olds. What a scourge. mad.gif

Anyway, I have forced Admin-validation on new registrations, so I HOPE that helps things work out a little better. ( JB: if you have a better idea, let me know.)

Ok, now, back to insulting Tyrannus.

Hehe. Spambots Begone Register that trademark now!

Is there a nice, neat range of IPs in the logs to block? Do these types of forum spam still require an actual person to register? Oi. Good move.

Now, back to instigating Mac/Windows wars.

We have been using admin approval over at our forums for registrations because we have been getting massive amount of "fake users" registering. I don't know how though, we are also using image verification image when signing up, so either the spambots are smart as hell to read images now, or someone is taking the time to fill in the image code. LOL

Losers. ;p

vBulleting and IPB both have updated CAPTCHA plugins that require you to answer a simple question. Have Jay search for this plugin on the IPB mod sites.

The way it works is you'll be prompted to enter an answer. That anwer requries a human on the other end.. ie what is 5+5? or Type "Rodians Stink" in the box provided. Since you have to type the answer in the new spam apps can't "guess" or detect the answer.

I had to enable this on several of my customer sites and since then all spam has stopped... viola!

PunBB has something like that. Its forum software I want to transfer this board to but the primary issue is I can't reverse the MD5'ed passwords so everyone would have to have their password reset and the whole debacle that would cause. Invision has lost my favor ever since it went pay-to-post bloatware.

I can send you the vB plugin if you want to convert it Liz.
