Poe turns 200 this year. Shall we raise a glass of Pinot Noir in his honor? You have to admit, we can't beat Poe for digging around in the unberbelly of our collective psyche. It was his genius. Or was it madness?

Whatever. It was very brave!

Of equally interesting note in this piece (provided one manages to overlook the cavalier way Poe's body is not only spoken of but outright fought over), though, is this: "Pity poor Tennyson. It’s his 200th, too, and the most exciting tribute he’s getting is a tea party."

sad.gif Okay. What's up with that? Tennyson rocks!

Didn't Poe say "Show me the poet who is completely honest with himself, and I will show you the greatest poet who ever lived?" I think it was Poe.

As for Tennyson:

The Eagle (a fragment)

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ringed with the azure world, he stands.

The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.

1851

He must have been talking about Dylan Thomas or, perhaps, Yeats. (The Raven is good, but The Bells can get on one's nerves. By the end, I was thinking, "Enough with the onomatopoeia already!")

Ah, well. Poetry wasn't his strong suit.

Nice fragment by Tennyson. Reminiscent of Icarus for some reason. Too bad Poe predated Nietzsche by a bit.

QUOTE
He who fights with monsters should be careful (lest he thereby become a monster). And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee.

Which is about the extent of my Nietzsche knowledge, but that just about says it all, doesn't it? Stare into the light or the abyss and one could be blinded for life... or die too young. sad.gif

Thanks for answering the poll. smile.gif

To be blunt, I haven't read even half of those listed works, but I voted anyhow. I like Poe very much, and a tribute is definitely due. He wasn't as weird as Lord Byron, though. He was a creeper.

Tyrannus - Master of wit, and quite deadly with a saber. Truly a wonder.. or so the "Legend" goes..

Never really delved into Byron. I'll take your word for it.

Good choice on the poll. I'm actually torn between it and one other and, thus, have yet to answer my own poll. :/

They're all good! Perhaps, I should have included an "All of the Above".... doh.gif

I've chimed in with my favorite of the bunch.

Thanks for raising the awareness, I must admit - the celebration (of both) slipped by me.
