I just wanted to both post past experiences of dealing with some stupid questions or demands.. and sort of ask for advice from others. ohmy.gif Yes, I know.. "Tyrannus? Need help?!" Well, it's just some simple pointers, so don't get your panties in a bunch. Let's start, shall we? You are welcome to chime in with your own stories and such.. if you are so inclined. smile.gif

I get many a person come on and tell me to slap them. No, correction.. they demand it. I have always addressed this topic the same way. Assuming that we don't want others to know who is who on the Admin rank list, I just say either "I'd rather not.." or "I shouldn't." It keeps you ambiguous, and you avoid it. Now, they always question -- A.K.A. demand further -- and that's where I usually say "I won't." or "I will not." Stuff along those lines. Do you guys have any lines to give an aging coot.. I would like to know if there's some specific lines I should spout.

I'll post more questions later.. I'm getting tired now. (No joke intended.. mad.gif )

Well, even in my short time with RJ, I've received many a request or question which really makes one wonder about the author's state of mind.

Example 1

Unnamed Perpetrator: "HOW I GET IN UR CLAN!!?????"
Me: "RJ Membership is invitation only."
Unnamed Perpetrator: "HOW I GET IN UR CLAN!!?????"
Me: "As I said, membership is invitation only."
Unnamed Perpetrator: <begins to lame other players>
Me: "Laming is prohibited."
Unnamed Perpetrator: "LET ME IN UR CLAN PLZZZ!!!!"

While I am typing my response, this individual decided that grip-kicking me to death will enhance the chance for membership.

Example 2

Unnamed Perpetrator: "CAN I TRYOUT U CLAN?" (scripted, so this was repeated 3 times)
Me: "RJ Membership is invitation only."
Unnamed Perpetrator: "WHo IS ADMIN???"
Me: "JayBaen and Ruggiero are admins."

Seeing neither JayBaen nor Ruggiero on the server,

Unnamed Perpetrator: "CAN I TRYOUT U CLAN?"
Unnamed Perpetrated disconnected. (1 second later)

Example 3

Unnamed Perpetrator begins laming the instant he joins the server.
After repeated warnings, he is put to sleep.

Unnamed Perpetrator: "hey, wtf did i do wrong stop laming me you lame [string of expletives deleted] admin"
Me: "Perhaps you should have heeded the warnings about laming. Incidentally, swearing is also prohibited."
Unnamed Perpetrator: "[Expletives deleted]" (obviously a bind)
Unnamed Perpetrator: "[Expletives deleted]" (obviously a bind)
Unnamed Perpetrator: "[Expletives deleted]" (obviously a bind)
Unnamed Perpetrator: "lolz" (obviously a bind)

This individual gets silenced. At which point he begins to use his name to further display his extensive "vocabulary."
He is promptly removed from the server.

***

Hmm...Interesting people. blink.gif

So, slap 'em. I mean, if that's their idea of fun, why not indulge them? dry.gif

This thread has been static for far too long. (I think I know that guy, EQ.)

One thing that really gets to me are those who come on a server asking over and over again: "Whose admin?" (No comment on the possessive.)

After the umpteenth time (provided no one answers), they set about laming. Now, the reason for asking becomes clear. Perhaps, they even lame an admin. Being a good admin, you will take some kind of action - whether the laming is against you or a visitor.

But, let's suppose it is you. The response to your action will be: "OMG... sry i didn know yu wuz admin." (And yes, there are still only 3 letters in "was".) To which you might say something like, "Why should that make any difference?" To which they will respond: " lolz " (Yep, I know that guy.) " 'Cause. "

The real answer, of course, is that he knows an admin can (and probably will) do something about it; a visitor can do nothing except kill the guy. If the visitor is new to the game, they may not even be able to do that.

In the lamer's mind, having no response to "Whose admin?" means that he can lame with impunity - that is, enjoy himself at the expense of all others with no fear of retaliation. (There are just too many parallels between that last and modern-day society to find comfort.)

My only advice to admin is that - while you want to use your powers sparingly and in an equitable fashion - kindly don't go in the opposite direction. smile.gif I've seen many an admin freeze because as soon as an admin command is used, someone inevitably says, "Admin abusers!" But, considering that those folks are generally lamers themselves, I say don't worry about it. smile.gif

I find the RJ atmosphere quite a bit more fun than most, in large part to good admin-ing. (If that wasn't a word, it is now.) If more servers kept people around who use common courtesy and actually want to *play*, while booting those whose sole reason for being seems to be making everyone else miserable, there might be more than two JO servers that I visit on a regular basis. rolleyes.gif

Other games are a completely different story. biggrin.gif

A couple of other points ...

Never underestimate the power good admining has on others around... from all angles. Those who were about to lame just may change their mind having seen a situation taken under control. Those coming to the server to play take note of a well-oiled machine and continue to return. You, as the admin gain respect for the clan by the way the moment is handled.

Never underestimate the power of not using the /jkkick /amkick command too soon. There are a lot of lamers who 'test' the waters to find out the general talent level of the server. Engaging the lamer in a duel and crushing him repeatedly can have quite a calming effect on the chap. This can come from anyone in our clan, given that all bear some sort of admin repsonsibility, and level of swordsmanship. Even (and especially) a lamer knows quality when he/she is on the receiving end of it and often will ride off into the sunset on their own, steering their lamer friends clear of servers like ours.

Never underestimate the power of some general housecleaning. Successfully removing a lamer or 3 from the server can take care of what seems like many more due to 1) their constant changing of names and rejoining and 2) that lamers attract lamers ... what you remember as being one lamer when you first joined has somehow turned into 7, and you don't remember when. Having a sharp eye for when's the right moment to remove someone has grand repercussions for the others still choosing to hang around. They see "the line" and respond accordingly.

Never underestimate the power of allowing a fellow /jkadmin or /amadmin to do his/her job if already engaged. Like good parenting, lamers should understand that "mom" is going to support "dad's" desicions ... publicly. If one sees another (in our case RJ) dealing with a lamer, not pulling up to the scene in your squad-car, but rather allowing the member to do his/her job gives a very unified front to our adminship. It keeps lamers from knowing that it's OK to lame, as long as so-in-so isn't here.

Never underestimate the power of allowing other visitors to the server do your dirty work for you wink.gif . In our case, most of our visitors enjoy the atmosphere enough that they will step in on our behalf and either speak for our cause or politely "saber someone in their place" with skills as good, if not better, than your own. It's one thing for a perpetrator to expect a clan member to sweep the floor, it quite another when visitors guard on their behalf. It speaks volumes. Let it happen.

Any other points people want to continue to spew to this thread will be most welcome. Fresh ideas on an old subject can rejuvenate even the most weary of admin.

Happy Sabering.

JB

well to me laming isnt a crime or a horrible thing to do. I admit I have lamed people for no reason when I knew they would get mad. not on a RJ server but sometimes I just come home and want to kill someone instead of walking around waiting for duelist to rubb it in on how bad I am because I am to tense to duel I sometimes goto servers in an anonamous( know I spelled it wrong) name or sometimes the original HASMTAR and lame people for the fun of it so I can get hunted down and such. It's wierd because I can't stand being lamed when I am in a good mood but I do it to others, because in this game I have found its always harder to be hunting lamers than it is being hunted because all you gotta worry about is where to dispose of them and where you wanna catch them at since they are going to be trying to get you.

anyone else ever thought this way, probably not but I thought I would ask mellow.gif

Two issues I've always wrestled with are vigilante players and retaliatory laming.

Vigilante players are those who would not lame under normal circumstances, but, when they see the opportunity to hunt down another lamer, or to show his power to a newbie who doesn't understand the rules of laming, do so to the fullest extent. Personally, it has been my policy to warn vigilantes to let admins handle it, mainly because I have found that laming encourages more laming (see below regarding retaliation) and because I think our rules should not bend because one person has a 'just cause' while another person may not. From a moral standpoint, it's difficult for us to say that we are being objective if we don't draw the lines as stated by our rules.

Retaliatory laming is another thing that I personally do not support. And before you start thinking that I say this because I'm incapable of retaliation, I do have a small amount of proficiency with the force...at least enough to stave off would-be lamers. Once again, self-perceived just cause should not be valid reason for breaking rules, especially when there are people who can handle the situation.

Now, in the interest of full disclosure, there is a special cold place in my heart for people who abuse the reconnect command. These are the people who lame, leave before you can take any action, come back innocently under another name, and await another opportunity to execute these craven backstabbing maneuvers. People who abuse reconnect expedite their way to my "kickban-worthy" book.

In conclusion, I must mention the people who have taken laming to the highest level of sophistication. These are the people who read the rules, and know them by heart. They know exactly where all the technical loopholes lie, and how far the tolerance of the admins will go. They will then start treading ever so carefully on the line, so as to be an irritation, but give the admin no valid reason for any sort of action. This is what I term "passive laming" and I view it as laming to the highest degree.
