In my opinion, it is more peaceful. I love the principles of nonresistance. I would never go as far as to claim to be a pacifist, but I’m generally opposed to the use of force.
The problem with many forms of martial arts is that you are forced to attack in order to defend yourself. It may sound silly, but picture this… Somebody swings, you block. They swing again, you block again. They’ll keep swinging until they’re tired or until you launch an attack. At which time, you swing, they block… You’re not going to get anywhere fast. Now, with Aikido, they swing, you use their movement to throw them ten feet away from you. They get up and swing, you gently grab their wrist and make them trip over your leg. They get up again and push you… you roll and at the same time throw them several feet again. Each time you throw them, using the attackers energy instead of your energy, they get hurt… you get to roll around. All you’ve done is blocked their attack and let them beat themselves up… beautiful! Force should only be used as a resort. If you must use force, turn the energy exerted for the attack against you back on the attacker. By doing this, you have create a response equal to the attack, not greater than the attack. Now, if you’re a bit more aggressive, you can study Aiki-Jitsu which combines Aikido and Jujitsu… these are the folks that you want to watch. They’ll throw you just as easily, but before they let go they’ll punch you really hard… someplace that will really hurt.  --Deacon -------------------- ============================================= • E .· ` ' / ·. hey deacon, just 2 add on wat u were sayin... we also try and use the least amount of force as possible. u'd be surprised how similar styles are... specially tai chi. of course the fight will end like that, if u choose 2 fight by blocking, force, blocking, force... so us "ninjas"
