ummm... okay smarty. Try this on for size...

You said that it had no weight. Atomic weight anyone?

"An atomic weight (relative atomic mass) of an element from a specified source is the ratio of the average mass per atom of the element to 1/12 of the mass of 12C" in its nuclear and electronic ground state.

A sample of any element consists of one or more isotopes of that element. Each isotope is a different weight. The relative amounts of each isotope for any element represents the isotope distribution for that element. The atomic weight is the average of the isotope weights weighted for the isotope distribution and expressed on the 12C scale as mentioned above.

And for the record, I still think the answer was "a duck"!

ok then, try THIS on for size, Duck Boy! tongue.gif I wasnt saying that the answer was ANY of the elements. i said it was the TABLE of elements. NOT the elements themselves. I dont mean a table on a piece of paper either. i mean the table itself. there is no table, just a drawn up chart. so BOOYAKA!!!!! EAT IT!!

Oh my... this COULD be fun.... Oh, and BTW, I prefer "Duck Man" or "Duckie" (ode to JH).

I hold everything, yet i have no volume.
TRUE. You're talking about holding the elements, that we have discovered, that make up everything around us.

I have columns, but i have no height.
TRUE. We're talking about a 2D representation.

I am everything, but i have no weight.
FALSE, if you don't have weight because you are not an element then you are not everything. Had you said I contain everything, then I could say okay. The logic in this sentence is in error

I am a table that has no surface.
TRUE. You're talking about the concept of the table, not a physical representation of the table.

I have masses, but i have no weight.
Ohhhh no... lookie what I found. The table doesn't have mass, the elements do. And if you "have masses" you must have weight because you are refeing to the elements. How about saying I contain masses, but have no weight.

Please don't get me wrong, I loved the riddle, I'm just saying that it could be a bit of a stretch.

If we follow your logic, the the following is true
(DISCLAIMER - This is a joke. I am making no theological statements!!!)

God is love
Love is blind
Ray Charles is blind
Ray Charles is God

So with this, I would like to say BooYa! I have all kinds of mahd logixical skilz!

Later, we'll be characterized by Rugg as superficial manipulators of rhetoric and dialectic.

Yep. Or next thing Rugg will bust out the "Allegory of Whoopass" and rain destruction down upon you at the point of my saber.

This shows an inability to think figuratively. We recommend the student to remedial therapy.

Sophistry again. By 'having' mass, one can also understand that the table 'depicts' mass: as in "the paintings have people in them" One would not assume that therefore your post-rodian-sabering dismembered body is stuck to the painting, no matter how attractive that may be.

We therefore recommend a reading diet of poetry and other instances of language where one can utilize more than one definition of a word. We also recommend castration, so he doesn't breed.

There you go again... you almost had me fooled, but then you talked yourself back into your corner. I believe I said

""An atomic weight (relative atomic mass) of an element ..."

If you're saying that the table depicts "having" mass then you must agree that the table depicts having weight based on the above statement.

As for the other stuff...

"Allegory of Whoopass"... I'll bring my finger puppet and reenact it for you.

"This shows an inability to think figuratively." No, I think based on the above comments, I've proven my point. Had the riddle been worded differently I would bow to you... since it ain't... I won't

" We recommend the student to remedial therapy." See above

"We therefore recommend a reading diet of poetry and other instances of language where one can utilize more than one definition of a word. " I speak five languages and have a *very* large collection of books. Most of them don't even have pictures like your collection ... (I said most!)

"We also recommend castration, so he doesn't breed." I married... You'll have to see my wife if you want to collect it. I only have visiting rights on the weekends.

Silly Rodian.... when will you learn!

I thought you might like that one! laugh.gif

I think that Kyzene said that the riddle I posted would do... unless there has been a change of heart! And now that I've set myself up for a whoopin' everytime I join the server... Here goes...

I never was, am always to be,
No one ever saw me, nor ever will
And yet I am the confidence of all
To live and breathe on this terrestrial ball.

What am I?

OOOOH, what did i miss?! lol, DuckMan, Rugg won the argument. The riddle was not flawed. As Rugg said, THINK FIGURATIVELY, not literally. I wasnt talking about the ACTUAL ELEMENTS THEMSELVES!! SO BOOYAKA!!!! And Rugg pwnt u! lol! YES, the table DEPICTS having weight and mass etc. but it does not actually HAVE THE WEIGHT OF THOSE ELEMENTS ON THE TABLE. Go find ANY representation of the Table and check to see if Zinc, the element itself, is lying around on the table where u can pick it up and weigh it...its not! ITS ONLY A REPRESENTATION!!! BOOYAKA!!! WE WIN!! *Brings out saber and Castrates the Duck* MUAHAHAAA!!
