Yes, I honestly don't care about either the story or the characters of the Star Wars sequels (if one can call them sequels), but have thoroughly enjoyed hearing legitimate criticisms and thoughtful opinions on these movies from various sources these past few days...far more so than the movies themselves, actually.

As visually beautiful as they are, they are nonetheless unmitigated disasters from a storytelling perspective. One might say that's true of the originals as well, considering opinions are subjective and Lucas himself is admittedly neither a good storyteller nor a dialogist, but rather an exceptional concept artist. As the Star Wars fan community appears to be split right down the middle over these, however, I'm curious to understand just why that may be. Is it a generational thing or were they really that bad or good?

I have no patience whatsoever either with the alt-right versus SJW bull###### propogating everywhere and into everything or for the outright hatred being heaped on these films' creators and associated artists, so I've studiously avoided that whenever possible. OTOH, if you've a few hours to spare for some interesting and/or amusing takes on Disney's treatments, there are surprisingly quite a few good ones around.

This guy's editing skills are themselves nothing to sneeze at and he puts them to excellent use beginning with his "critique" of The Force Awakens. So respected was this "critique," MauLer had to clean up his language for a three-part series on The Last Jedi to accommodate the parents of young children who were begging him for a version they could watch and understand without being subjected to the f-bomb every other breath. Love it, hate it or somewhere-in-between, you must admit the guy has an eye for logic and continuity or, more appropriately in this case, the lack thereof.

Then, there are the more sober(?), somber(?)...whatever...explorations of all things Star Wars by Thor Skywalker, et al.

As much of a Star Trek enthusiast as I am, I can't get into the new ST movies, either. Either they're just as bad from a storytelling perspective or I am just getting really, really old. smile.gif

Kids seem to love them, though, so they must have some endearing qualities. I honestly found some of J.J. Abrahms and Rian Johnson's ideas intriguing myself, but was ultimately disappointed that nothing was done with them and/or they didn't actually lead anywhere. (MauLer actually explains the problem of dead-ending, original ideas better than I ever could. So, see his channel, if interested.)

As former canon has been utterly discarded and there admittedly was no planning involved in the production of this trilogy (again, from a storytelling perspective), one has to wonder if a series of prequels attempting to explain everything may be on the horizon....

Finally, kudos to the cast and crew of all these films. They did an excellent job with what they were given to work with and that's a reflection of their own talent, if nothing else.

What a strange trip it's been...down memory lane. Here I am, reviewing 15 year old conversations about skinning and going, confused.gif ...and I produced four skins myself at the time!

If I had to make a skin for JKII today, I'd have to learn how to do it all over again.

It got me wondering, though -- if anyone is still in touch with OneWingedAngel, TheBeast, et al. -- if any RJ are still modding, mapping or, perhaps, even developing games professionally today.

I'm very much into the Fallout and Skyrim modding communities, though I haven't produced any mods (aside from an unpublished companion mod for Skyrim) for those games myself, as much as I'd like to. There are already so many exceptionally high-quality mods available for those games, it would probably be a pointless endeavor to learn the ins and outs of creating mods for them.

Not many developers/publishers even support modding of their games anymore, unless making garish attempts to include them in their microtransaction fiascos. wacko.gif I actually fear for the future of the modding community in general at this point. But...let's not get into that. Too depressing.

Any news on this front?

QUOTE(InfiniteWarrior @ Nov 1 2019, 11:21 AM)
I've not seen the latest, unfortunately, so I can't really form an opinion on the matter.

Okay. So, I've finally seen The Last Jedi and...thought it viewed like a patchwork quilt. Disjointed, incoherent and I could sort of, kind of follow the plot if I filled in all the (huge) blanks myself. Visually stunning, as always; John Williams' music carries it along beautifully, as always; loved the exotic animals -- even the cutesy ones; and...am very, very curious about the outlines of the last three movies dreamed up by Lucas that Disney ignored. (I guess I'll take that curiosity to my grave.)

Not a fan of the prequels, but they did have their moments. This one strikes me as a bunch of meaningless-in-themselves events spliced together, and I certainly can understand where the "rehashing," among other, criticisms are coming from. (After all, if Vader can be turned, surely Kylo can. Blah, blah, blah.) I thought it might make more sense were it a three-part trilogy itself, complete with backstories of what actually seem like potentially interesting, but ultimately wasted characters. (For example, when Finn made his appearance in Force Awakens, I thought, "Wow. A stormtrooper with a conscience. This is going to be great!" And...was shortly disappointed.)

"It's just a movie" -- a criticism tossed at people who would have preferred it did the Star Wars universe justice -- is actually the most damning criticism I've yet heard of it yet. Yes, it was just a movie and not a cultural phenomenon. But, then, how often does that happen?

The Rise of Skywalker is going to have its hands full trying to tie this hodge-podge together. At this point, though, I doubt it's even tried...and find I don't really care.

BTB, I haven't sought out stuff like this, but Robot Head's response (for one) to the dismissals of fan criticism of the new movies by Abrams, Kennedy, Johnson and others, I must admit, is hilarious. See Disney Doesn't Understand Lightsabers and It's a Trap! Strong Women of Star Wars, Itís A Lie & Hereís The Proof. I mean..who knew years of arduous training is required to actually master the Martial Arts and we like "strong" characters regardless their gender?

Sounds like quality of characterization and everything else has taken a huge hit, but (to be fair) Lucas already had undermined his own legacy with the prequels, afic. So, I'm not even sure LucasFilm would have done a better job, much less whether I should bother with Disney's.

So -- 6 years on -- what do you think? Has Disney ruined the franchise for profit? Has the saga evolved as it should and not necessarily as expected? (Mark Hamill apparently would have preferred "as expected," but I can't really tell how much of his commentary is thoughtful criticism and how much is due to being butt-hurt at not having a bigger part.)

Have totalitarian political agendas taken it over?

I've not seen the latest, unfortunately, so I can't really form an opinion on the matter, but from what Hamill has said over the years, it actually sounds like Rian Johnson may have simply moved away from the "you're either a Jedi or a Sith" mentality -- with which we're all too familiar (as did the last installment of the original trilogy when Luke's own "dark side" was exposed*) -- and into the land of "moral ambiguity" that's become so popular in other art forms. (I refuse to call them "entertainment," though most specimens obviously are intended purely for entertainment...and, of course, profit.)

It's interesting to see how Art & Entertainment evolves from one generation to the next, but I can't help thinking LucasFilm would have done a much better job of seeing it through than Disney while still gleefully passing the mantle on to the next generation, as did the Star Trek franchise. (Reminiscent of Bethesda and Obsidian, also, isn't it?)

*IIRC, Hamill complained about that, too, until he finally got it.

Done deal. Not that I'm actually on Steam much, at this point, other than to check out the Steam sales. icon_redface.gif

Does anyone still jump on JK2/3? I have it on Steam, though I dont think I ever tried to find any servers. Was more of a nostalgic purchase during a steam sale.

I don't. Have to run it locally for the time being. (Mobile connection only these days. You know how it is.)

JB, by his own accounts, occasionally jumps in...though alone for the most part -- unless hopping onto European servers from what I hear.

JK2 and JK3 are effectively dead for most PC players as far as I can tell. (As if JK3 ever really took off at all.)

JK2 is only worth it for me if I get a hankering to run around those awesome maps and so forth people made for it back in the day. Well worth the time alone, imho. A SP run-through might be worth it also just to gauge how far we've come since then, if nothing else. : ) (Remember rolling everywhere you need to go? How passe is that?)

Give me my sprint key! Give me modes of travel other than "fast!" I'll love you forever. lol

Second drive.... Yep, yep, yep. If the gaming industry keeps going like this, we'll need a rack of hard drives to keep up.

RDR2 comes in at a staggering 150 GBs. : o

Good thing we're in terabyte territory at this point?

I typically will build up a little balance on Amazon over time, so that way, I can afford some of these new games or any parts for my tower, if I have to upgrade anything.

Oh! You had to mention "upgrade." Well...my hard drive is failing. lol So -- by some miracle -- I managed to wrangle a new one and -- by yet some other miracle -- managed to wrangle a HD case that I hope I can use to transfer all my progress on the heretofore mentioned games to the new one. (Not that the new one is all that great, you understand.)

I did upgrade the memory and, uh, video card a few years ago. (Would rather have two video cards, but you know.) Managed to make it through both Fallout 4 and The Witcher 3, regardless. No doubt, though, my motherboard is screaming at this point!

Hang in there, dude! We'll make it yet.

Not just thinking about getting RDR2. Definitely will, if humanly possible, but won't be playing Red Dead Online.

At least they didn't make it exclusive to their own launcher. It'll come to Steam in December. Since I have Metro lined up, I suppose I can wait for a Steam sale...whether I want to or not. Really hyped to go camping in that gorgeous, "rich ecosystem." Guess I'll have to pull off a few robberies with Dutch and gang to make enough money to customize a saddle; buy Arcadia some treats, tonics, brush, etc.; but what the hay. : )

Watched a few episodes of a Let's Play to get a feel for it without too many spoilers, but the guy skipped out on all the intricacies and just rushed from objective to objective as fast he could...with a hundred or so horse crashes into rocks and trees along the way. lol (That alone was worth it. Hope he never owns one in irl! lol)

Really impressed with the thought and effort the devs put into the minute details, e.g. snow falling from trees when you brush past them; various shaders changing the look of the characters and their clothes depending on the circumstances; etc. Most studios would overlook or ignore all those details unconcerned whether the player would notice. Just incredible. Of course, some YouTubers couldn't resist putting out videos of "20 Insane Details in RDR2," part I, II, III.... Probably worth a gander as well, if interested in that sort of thing.

Wow. WoW. Haven't heard that name in a while. A few of the Revelstoners moved on to WoW, but it was subscription-based, so a no-go for me. GTA just never really appealed to me, but from what I've heard, I may be missing out.

Hi guys! Just another ghostrider checking in. So....

What are you playing now? Recommendations?

I'm personally avoiding most publishers and games these days for obvious reasons. After all, anything not created and produced by CDProjektRed has become rather suspect, hasn't it? laugh.gif

Ergo, I have resurrected, polished up and profusely modded some of the old classics, e.g. the Fallout series, and am especially into New Vegas at the moment. (Just have to cruise through the DLC before heading to the dam on that one.) Also hope to get around to the Metro series, eventually, but am presently playing Enderal, a game-in-itself mod built atop Skyrim's creation engine.

Would also love to play Red Dead Redemption 2. (I mean... look at this!) Horse bonding?! Awesome! Can you see me spending all my time with the horse? (Don't answer that. nod.gif) Who needs botched robberies and social drama when you can outfit, feed, brush and ride the horse to your heart's content? (Edit: Oh! And hunting, fishing, camping, harvesting, cooking and crafting, of course.)

The chances of it coming to PC grow slimmer by the day, though. Blast your pandering to consoles, Rockstar! doh.gif

In the case of SKYRIM, the modding community saves the game. (NTM, Brynjolf.) With the 31 mods I now have installed, the game finally plays, looks and feels as it should have from the start with only a few exasperating exceptions to the rule. Even first-person hands and third-person feet, etc. are not just bearable, but actually look somewhat realistic with certain body mods and re-textures installed.

At last, not only is the Thieves Guild for thieves only, but The Choice Is Yours in a great many other major and miscellaneous questlines as well. There's also a Quest Eraser available to rid your journal of unwanted entries added before (or even whether) 'The Choice Is Yours' is installed.

Bethesda should use the Nexus to go on a hiring spree. I'd compile a list of the best of the best, but I suppose that's a matter of opinion. (*ahem*...SkyUI, Categorized Favorites, Convenient Horses, Immersive HUD, aMidianBorn Book of Silence....)

What are your must-haves?
